Babies, television and videos: How did we get here?

چکیده
Baby media have exploded in the past decade, and children younger than 2 are showing increased use of these baby media. This paper examines the historical evidence of babies’ use of television since the 1950s as well as the various factors that have given rise to the current increase in screen media for babies. We also consider the ubiquitous role of television in American families, the impact of evidence regarding the educational benefits of educational television on preschoolers, and positive parental beliefs about the usefulness of such educational media in preparing young children for schooling. Finally, we examine the theoretical issues of importance for guiding research into the interactions between media exposure and cognitive development, including the role of media in changing the context of children’s development and constraints on the kinds of things babies can learn from screen media. Lastly, we suggest that screen media may indeed be changing the nature of chil-

How textbooks (and learners) get it wrong: A corpus study of modal auxiliary verbs
Many elements contribute to the relative difficulty in acquiring specific aspects of English as a foreign language (Goldschneider & DeKeyser, 2001). Modal auxiliary verbs (e.g. could, might), are examples of a structure that is difficult for many learners. Not only are they particularly complex semantically, but especially in the Malaysian context ...
متن کاملTelevision and children's executive function.
Children spend a lot of time watching television on its many platforms: directly, online, and via videos and DVDs. Many researchers are concerned that some types of television content appear to negatively influence children's executive function. Because (1) executive function predicts key developmental outcomes, (2) executive function appears to be influenced by some television content, and (3)...
متن کاملFast and Realistic Image Synthesis for Telemanipulation Purposes
We describe here a method to build fast and realistic synthetic images, which does not require a tedious a priori modeling of the scene to be displayed. We only use photos or videos of a real scene taken from some viewpoints, which in some way we \wrap" to get new (synthetic) images of the same scene. This way, we can virtually see and move inside the 3d scene. The process consists of two steps...

Three dimensional television (3DTV) and free viewpoint television (FTV) are believed to be the future of television broadcasting that would bring a more life-like and visually immersive home entertainment experience. These technologies will provide the users with the freedom to navigate through the scene and choosing a desired viewpoint. A desired viewpoint video can be synthesized at the recei...
متن کاملAutomatic text recognition in digital videos
We have developed algorithms for automatic character segmentation in motion pictures which extract automatically and reliably the text in pre-title sequences, credit titles, and closing sequences with title and credits. The algorithms we propose make use of typical characteristics of text in videos in order to enhance segmentation and, consequently, recognition performance. As a result, we get ...
